I, Frida

Ay, Caramba! Theatre
(Canada | Ecuador)

“This a deeply relevant story, told with passion and artistry. A multiplicity of people are bound to see themselves through Frida’s story—and not just the newly arrived to Canada.” —The Saskatoon Star Phoenix

I, Frida is a funny, warm, and heartfelt story about a newcomer’s journey to Canada, and her attempts at trying to fit into Canadian culture.

Written and performed by Yulissa Campos, I, Frida portrays a young activist’s fight for immigrants’ rights, while struggling with segregation, stereotypes, and her own traditions.

She feels like an outsider, despite the best intentions of those around her, until she finds inspiration from the two heroines in her life—her mother, and Frida Kahlo!

I, Frida will take you on a journey full of sabor Latino (Latin flavour) to discover the meaning of family, home, culture, and identity, in a time where the world is struggling with unprecedented numbers of forced migration.

RELATION TO QUIET RIOT

A young activist for immigrants’ rights is on her way to her first major presentation. Frida struggles with the fear of potential backlash and dangerous reactions to what she has to say. She reaches into her memories and experiences of her own immigration story for inspiration and courage.

This story touches on the systematic prejudice towards immigrants, women’s rights, and the daily riot that newcomers face to make room for themselves in a society full of barriers. I, Frida is a call for hope in a world that is currently facing the biggest human displacement ever witnessed.

With the support of the High Commission of Canada in Singapore, SK Arts and Canadian Stage.
